Developing the Vietnamese
poultry industry

While poultry production is still done on
a small scale in Vietnam, the industry
has a bright future. A new institute will

provide much-needed information, edu-
cation and research to help Vietnamese
poultry farmers

Broiler transportation

Research has shown that nearly half of
the birds that arrive dead at the process-
ing plant die of congestive heart failure,
related to poor ventilation in the trans-
port vehicle. A good understanding of air
flow through the vehicle could result in
better design and fewer losses. 2 5

Welfare discussions impair cage
developments

The welfare of battery hens is a hot topic in Europe
at the moment, and the current political deadlock is
holding back developments in cage design. World
Poultry talked to several manufacturers to discover
how they see the future of laying cages. 30

Controlling PEMS

Poultry Enteritis and Mortality Syndrome is one of the most damaging
diseases in the turkey industry. What is this disease and are there ways
to reduce its incidence in turkey flocks? 48

Middle East will remain IUII
major importer I

Over a decade ago, the Middle East was
seen as the most interesting area in terms
of developments in the poultry produc-
tion and trade. Today, the poultry indus-
try is looking at it from a new point of
view. The policy to become self-sufficient
has been more than successful for some

countries, while others still depend on 12

imports.

Cockfighting promotes and
preserves native Thai chicken

In order to improve the bio-diversity and to pre
serve genetic resources, the Thai Native Chicken
Conservation and Development Association (TNC-
CDA) organised the first International Amateur
Cockfighting Competition. The associations' presi-
dent Dr Abhichai Ratanavaraha explains that this
competition also helps Thailand's economically dis-
tressed farmers. 25

Reproduction is a crucial problem
in ostrich breeding

One of tlie most important limiting factors in the
expansion of the ostrich industry is the low rate of
reproduction as compared to poultry. Reproduction
is a crucial problem in ostrich breeding. It is limit-
ing the economical turnover and thus has an influ-
ence on the further development of this "new ani-
mal" branch worldwide. 20

Plenty of choice when
looking for automatic
watering systems

Automatic watering systems are divided
into three main groups. Bell drinkers
were the first to appear, followed by
automatic cups. Nipples drinkers
became popular in the early eighties, but
were already in use for many years in
cage systems. Today, a poultry farmer
can choose from hundreds of different
types of drinkers. 36

The challenge of controlling
infectious coryza

Any effective coryza prevention strategy
must include effective measures to tackle
secondary complicating factors. Effective
antibiotics are available to control out-
breaks, but recovered birds remain carriers
of Haemophilus paragallinarum, and strict
biosecurity remains the best defence. 50

Africa to benefit from
poultry scheme
The poultry industry in Africa is still largely
comprised of small flocks raised to supplement
family income and nutrition. We take a look at the
blirgeoning industry in several African countries,
and the challenges tliat face producers on tlie
African continent. lO

Vitamin E and immunity in
commercial broiler production
Tlie benefits of Vitamin E supplementation for
immune system fortification in broiler clocks have
been known for some time. New research lias now
conclusively proven these benefits in commercial
application trials. 20

British Pig and Poultry Fair: a low
profit summer for British broilers
British poultry producers are on the defensive with this
summers' average prices being tlie lowest since 1981.
Visitors to the British Pig and Poultry Fair were shown
that higher quality and increased customer
communication are their only hope to combat cheap
imports from Europe. 44

Disease control using
ethno-veterinary medicine
Poultry health is a major problem in Africa's family
poultry business. The high cost of vaccines means
that many poor farmers continue to use traditional
medicines, which often prove to be effective enough. 48
