For over forty years, FTSS and the companies from which it descended have been leaders in crash test dummy innovation. In the 1950s, they pioneered the industry with the development of research dummies for testing air and space craft ejection seats. The technology of these early dummies provided the foundation for creation of automotive crash test dummies in the early 1960s. Since then, technological advances have contributed to constant improvements in the capabilities, quality and accuracy of crash test dummies. FTSS produced the Hybrid I and Hybrid II series of dummies in the early 1970s, then introduced the Hybrid III family in 1976.

FTSS designs and manufactures, gauges, wires and calibrates its own line of load cells. FTSS uses Finite Element Methods to design its load cells which reduces development time. FTSS can now engineer and deliver a new load cell, gauged, wired and calibrated in eight to twelve weeks depending on the number of channels.

In addition to the high accuracy machining required, FTSS has a clean room laboratory for the application of strain gauges. This lab can offer complex strain gauging services for the development and testing of new dummies. A dedicated load cell calibration machine is also located in Plymouth with purpose FTSS designed calibration software.
